Halloween Costume Ideas Inspired by Recent Horror

It’s spooky season, and if you know us, you know our favorite holiday is Halloween. We’ve had numerous horror-themed costumes over the years, including Lizzie Borden, The Bride of Frankenstein, Chucky, and a zombie bride. While you may have a go-to costume that you put on every year to hand out candy to little goblins, why not mix it up this year? Looking for your best terrifying looks? Let’s take a look at last year’s best horror for inspiration, which has had plenty of time to marinate with audiences! Here are a few of our ideas from some of our favorite films released in recent years.

  1. Maxxxine- Maxxxine, starring Mia Goth, is a fun, nostalgic 80s themed costume. Rat or crimp your hair, find your brightest neon clothing, and go wild with the accessories! Our favorite look? The red “mask” of makeup that covers her eyes in the film. If you’d rather go more old school, you can dress as Pearl, also played by Mia Goth, from the 2022 movie which was set in 1918. A bright red dress, a maniacal smile, and a fake ax are all you need to bring this character to life.
  2. Longlegs- There are a few options of characters you can dress up as from Longlegs. Bring out your inner Dana Scully and pretend to be an FBI agent! Or dress like a nun delivering boxes that are “gifts from the church.” Or, if you really want to get into character, take on Nic Cage’s interpretation of Longlegs complete with blonde wig, vintage clothes, and hand movements that will certainly frighten any trick-or-treaters. But please, refrain from headbanging.
  3. Abigail- Do you have some dance skills you could show off? Dress like Abigail by finding a ballet costume, preferably in white, that you can splatter with bright, red, blood. A pair of vampire teeth aren’t necessary but could add a fun flair to your seemingly innocuous costume. Not a dancer? Find a costume to portray one of the criminals who kidnaps Abigail. But don’t remove your mask unless you want your identity to be known.
  4. Immaculate and/or The First Omen- What a year for horror featuring nuns! Take your pick and dress as Sydney Sweeney’s character Cecelia from Immaculate or Margaret, played by Nell Tiger Free from The First Omen. If you’ve seen either movie, you’ll be able to discover some fun props to incorporate into your costume and may pick up a few catch phrases people will recognize.
  5. Lisa Frankenstein- As a perfect couple’s costume, dress as Lisa and The Creature from Lisa Frankenstein. Not only do you get to have a fun, 80s inspired look as the character of Lisa, but you also get to style a vintage dead creature! We’re not sure if we can convince our husbands to partner with us on this for Halloween 2024, but we’ll be on the lookout for other duos who nail this look.
  6. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice- Any character from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice would be a hoot to dress up as this spooky season. You could go as old school Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) or Beetlejuice himself (Michael Keaton) from the 1988 film or transform into the modern interpretation of either of them. There are plenty of new characters in the 2024 sequel including Astrid Deetz played by Jenna Ortega. Whoever you choose, a gothic, Tim Burton-esque pallet will suffice and bring his ghoulish vision to life.
  7. I Saw the TV Glow- If you listen to our podcast, Horror Rewind, you know that we loved I Saw the TV Glow this past summer. If you enjoyed it as much as we did, dress up as a character from the fictional show in the film “The Pink Opaque.” These creatures would be especially fun for those of you who have special effects makeup skills! Want to keep it more low key? Dress in your 90s grunge and get into character by referencing things from the film. Bonus points if you draw a pink ghost on the back of your neck.
  8. A Quiet Place: Day One- Looking for an excuse not to speak to anyone? Dress up as someone from A Quiet Place: Day One. Making noise would be prohibited for your character and you’d be able to carry either a stuffed animal of a cat or bring your actual feline friend along, on a leash, of course. We know a few people will go the extra mile and dress as the creatures from the movie, but we prefer to keep it simple and…quiet.

Whatever you choose for Halloween, the most important thing is to have fun. And tag us on social media! We love a great spooky look on you or your children or a cute costume on your fur babies. Happy Halloween!
