Until Summer Comes Around by Glenn Rolfe | Horror Book Review

Until Summer Comes Around by Glenn Rolfe is a tale of a picture-perfect summer love story stuck in the eye of a terrible storm of terror that wreaks havoc on this poor town. 

A HUGE shoutout to everyone who recommended this one to me! It was Char who originally recommended it, sending me a message saying that I needed to pick it up ASAP! I later bought my copy from the author while at a Merrimack Valley Book Fest, and while I couldn’t wait to dive in, I just didn’t for some reason. Thanks to a nudge from the author himself, it finally happened! I read this book faster than anything I’ve read in the last three years! I was HOOKED!

My Thoughts on Until Summer Comes Around by Glenn Rolfe – 

While out on the pier one day, Rocky sees the girl of his dreams and, before thinking twice, takes off after her so he can say hello. That chance encounter kicks off a whirlwind summer romance that he can’t believe is happening. 

Unfortunately for him, it’s not just the heartbreak at the end of the summer that awaits him… his girl, November, has a wicked older brother, and she’s been keeping one heck of a big secret from Rocky. 

My goodness. Ready to live in Old Orchard Beach in 1986 for a bit?! Yet again, this author absolutely nails the atmosphere and setting so you are right there with the characters. The characters themselves also come to life! Early on, I thought about how nice it was to see such a kind and supportive family. 

While just a few light mentions, the bits about summer people vs tourists vs locals hit a soft spot. Growing up on an island off the coast of Maine, we had a big summer people/tourist community. Though we had a whole lot of nothing to do out there, I’m sure this OOB had its blessings and curses as well. In this tale, there sure were curses… Woof.

The book starts with a bang before diving back to build back up. I was having such a lovely time with this cute teenage summer love, I kept almost forgetting that this was a horror book until the next person was killed…

My Favorite Passages from Until Summer Comes Around – 

A voice in the back of his mind, where the monsters under the bed conversed, where the bad thing in the closet and the creature in the woods played head games, where the nightmare producers in his sleep placed Little House on the Prairie under a heavy fog and infested the family show with zombies, this great communicator told him something bad was happening right here in his summertime town.

Blood shot up into the night from the stump of her severed neck. With her head tucked under his arm, Gabriel crouched over the spurting corpse with his tongue out, trying to catch the crimson droplets like a child trying to taste a falling snowflake.

My Final Thoughts on Until Summer Comes Around – 

Man, I wish I could type the name of this title without tearing up! When it appeared in the story, I lost it. What an amazing teenage love story with so much horror throughout!
