Welcome to Spooky Season – The Horror Blog

horror

Hi Everyone! We’re heading into my favorite time of the year, Halloween. Granted, horror is my go to year-round, but, Halloween just gives me all the warm and fuzzy feels. It feels more appropriate to be my horror-obsessed self this time of year. My Halloween decorations are up and giving me daily hits of dopamine and I’m already plotting all the content I’m going to take in this October. While my life is chaos, and nothing can be set in stone, I figured I’d share what I intend to enjoy this year for the month of October.

Netflix just dropped the new season of Monster. I’ve been waiting for this one, and I’m halfway through it already. I’ve enjoyed it so far, but there are some stylistic choices with the storytelling that I’m not loving. I feel like it’s just taking me out of the actual story they’re trying to tell about Gein. At least that’s how I feel as a viewer and as someone who doesn’t know that much about Ed Gein. Since I started off with shows, let’s keep on that train. I am behind so I will be finishing Alien Earth during October. I’m not going to lie…I was hesitant about this one, mainly because we just had an Alien film last year. It just didn’t feel like something we needed. I’m a few episodes in, and I’m pleasantly surprised. The story they’re weaving caught me off guard. It’s better than I thought it was going to be. Plus, if there’s any early 2000s fans out there, they kept Timothy Olyphant’s casting pretty hush-hush. I had no clue he was going to be in it, as a fan, I was happy to see him (haha). If you’re skeptical, but like the franchise at all, give it a go. The last new content for shows I’ll be checking out this month is going to be It: Welcome to Derry. This isn’t hitting HBO Max until the end of the month. October 26th. So, I won’t be finishing it in October, but I’ll be at least a few episodes in by Halloween. I wasn’t sure how on-board I was going to be for this series, the fact that they got Skarsgård back as Pennywise is a huge plus for me. I liked what he did with the role, and quite frankly, I don’t think it would have been a thing without his casting.

For comfort/rewatch series I’ve started to re-watch The Haunting of Hill House and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I love both these shows, and they’re so atmospheric and just perfect for Halloween time. If I happen to have the time—I’ll be into The Fall of the House of Usher. Apparently, Netflix is going to be a big go-to for me this Halloween. It’s just the vibes I’m feeling this year. Usher and Hill House are both Mike Flannigan shows, I love everything of his I’ve seen. If you haven’t watched either, I highly recommend. The Haunting of Hill House is a modern re-imagining of the 1959 Shirley Jackson novel of the same name. The Fall of the House of Usher is based on Edgar Allan Poe’s works. The whole series adapts multiple stories from Poe and who isn’t in the mood for Edgar Allen Poe at Halloween?

There’s a couple books I plan on reading in October. I am working on the newest novel from Stephen Graham Jones, The Buffalo Hunter Hunter. Seeing as SGJ is one of my favorite authors, I plan on at least having a short review of the book. T. Kingfisher just released her new novella What Stalks The Deep. I love her Sworn Soldier series and grabbed it for 30% off (thank you, Amazon). I have an audiobook I’m listening to during my commute A Misfortune of Lake Monsters. There may be another book, if I have the time, but those are my definites for October.

It’s impossible to list all the horror movies I want to get in for Spooky Season. At least, impossible if I want this to be of reasonable length. We’re going to focus on films that I haven’t seen yet. One I’m super excited about is the last Conjuring film. It’s coming to streaming shockingly fast, October 7th—I believe. I’m a huge fan of the films, and this is at the tippity top of my must watch list. My husband and I are locking in that evening after his chemo session and we’re going to see what Ed and Lorraine Warren got in store for us. It looks like HBO Max just added Bring Her Back. That was another highly anticipated film for me this year. Amazon Prime added the most recent remake of Wolfman some time ago. I know it wasn’t particularly well received, but I’m curious and am loving Julia Garner in horror right now. I plan on peeping it out. The Monkey was added to Hulu, based on a Stephen King short story. I was also very intrigued by the movie Together, while not streaming for free (to my knowledge) on one of my platforms, it is available for rent at a normal price and not the pricier “theaters at home” experience. I’ll most likely be renting this.

So- that is a nice little glimpse into what my Spooky Season for 2025 is going to look like! If there’s anything listed you’re curious about or would want a dedicated post for, please comment below! Also- come follow me on my socials. I’m always looking to connect with other horror fans or writers.

Thanks for reading ❤️
